Washington Post:Much Better than Adequate Progress

April 5, 2006 by dave

Be sure to read this Washington Post piece by Karin Chenoweth in response to a recent Post article which included essays from principals about why they didn't like No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

Outlook featured 11 principals explaining why their schools didn't make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as defined by No Child Left Behind. Toward the end of the article, one of the principals said, "We're doing the best we can, but if someone can do it better, let them show us how."

In this article, Karin shares the stories of successful schools who are taking NCLB's goals seriously and have great success with their students in meeting grade-level proficiency. The same thing exists here in California. There are schools across the state who are helping their students meet grade-level proficiency, even the minority and low-income students. They're not settling for the status quo. They're doing what it takes in classrooms across the state every day.
