Canadian Teachers Want "Pet Care"

This story blew me away. Apparently, the Manitoba Teachers' Society is discussing a resolution calling for "pet care" in addition to existing child care reimbursements.

The resolution from the Prairie Rose School Division calls from members attending Manitoba Teachers' Society events to be reimbursed for pet care.

It argues some members may have responsibilities beyond child care or for dependant care that currently gets reimbursed.

The resolution says members could only claim for expenses when family members can't take care of a pet.

It says that acknowledges not all pets can be left alone overnight for extended periods of time.
The resolution estimates pet care costs at approximately 15 to 20 dollars night.

Geesh! And some people say that teacher unions are out of control. Imagine that.

I like to look at this from

I like to look at this from the other direction. Right now, everyone gets the pay they get. If the schools pay for $10/day pet care for all employees:

- all employees will make less money, so the schools can pay for the pet care
- employees with pets will receive a minor benefit that may or may not balance out how much less they are making
- employees without pets just end up with less
- the extra money goes to the company/people managing the benefit

The idea of most benefits and insurance is to let individuals benefit from being part of a larger group in the case that the individual can not handle a surprise event by themselves. Health insurance makes sense for covering major, unexpected costs, but not for routine costs. Life insurance makes sense if someone else is depending on your income, but not just to give your kids a bunch of money. Disability insurance makes sense if you end up unable to earn a paycheck for months or years, but not if you have to miss a few days or weeks of work. Pet benefits are really just a lose-lose situation.
